The Chiang Mai Sunday Market (also known as the Sunday Walking Street Market) is Chiang Mai’s largest and most popular market and runs every Sunday from 4pm until midnight.
The expansive market is situated at the heart of the old city and spans a length of 1km from Tha Phae Gate to the end of Ratchadamnoen Road, as well as numerous offshoots up the many side streets.

It is also worth noting that many of the stalls here have fixed prices, so unless you are buying multiple items from the same vendor, there won’t be much haggling at this market. You will find as you walk around that some items are sold at multiple stores, so it is worth shopping around for the best price.
Due to the sheer size of the market, the main road is closed during the market to allow stalls to set up on the road and pedestrians to wander down the street. You will find plenty of food vendors selling authentic Thai food as well as freshly squeezed juices and dessert. When your feet get tired from all the walking, you can stop and get a cheap massage for only 150 THB per hour.
The Sunday Walking Street Market is surrounded by restaurants, 7/11’s and ATM’s so you will have no trouble getting a cold drink or some cash out during the market.
The market opens at around 4pm, although not all stalls will be set up by this time. The best time to go to the market is around 6pm, when the sun starts to set. It will be a lot cooler by this time and the main tourist crowds won’t have yet arrived.
