Baan Kang Wat

Baan Kang Wat is an incredible artist village in Chiang Mai; a testament to the unique creativity and talent of northern Thailand. Whether its contemporary arts or traditional wood carving and weaving, this part of the country does it in a one-of-a-kind manner.

This artist village is an awesome place that highlights local talent while offering several activities and classes that tourists can take part in.

Baan Kang Wat, Sunday Market, Cafe, Food, Address & Hours, Chiang Mai

It’s one of the newer tourist attractions in town, but you can tell that it has been well thought out. As you enter, you’ll see a series of little shop houses whose design blends both modern and traditional Thai architecture, built around a small amphitheatre. The surroundings are green and lush, which contrasts wonderfully with the wood used to build the shophouses.

Each creative business you’ll encounter here has a strong emphasis on local, organic, or sustainable products. In one way or another, they all give back to the community. There are a handful of amazing art galleries and studios, as well as cafes and a garden that grows herbs and spices. Come with an appetite; the food here is simple but delicious, with authentic, delicious Thai coffees and espressos to boot!

Some of the studios also offer workshops, which are highly recommended – especially if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty to truly learn the ins and outs of the local crafts. The schedules for the workshops change frequently, but they’re all good fun and a great way to interact with the locals while learning something new that you can take home with you.

Otherwise, stroll through the cute shop houses and admire the different works of art created by others. The time that you spend here is worth every minute; there is simply no other place in Chiang Mai quite like it.

Baan Kang Wat is a charming green oasis found just off Canal Road; far from the traffic of the city centre.
