Aside from being an imposing presence, the ambience at the top is very relaxing. Visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the farm fields, town, and nearby mountains. Although no one knows exactly when the temple was erected, it has long been the main landmark of Pai; one which can even be seen from the air.

The best time to visit Chedi Phra That Mae Yen is at dusk or dawn so that you can watch the movement of the sun behind the clouds. It is a truly awe-inspiring feeling to be here. When you reach the top, you will see a white chedi in the shape of a bell, which features an umbrella-shaped top in Burmese design.

Whether you come for the sights, the exercise, the photos, or to pray, this important attraction shouldn’t be missed while you are in Pai. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, and dress appropriately since this is a sacred temple.

The temple is found just behind the village of Mae Yen. It’s quite a steep hike to get to the top since the road is 400 meters long – plus there are another 353 steps that need to be climbed to get to the top. Depending on your fitness level, you may want to either take a car or motorbike to the temple. Along the way, you will find several restaurants and stalls selling refreshments and food. If you feel tired or would like a break on your way to the top, the friendly vendors here will welcome you.
