The Chiang Mai Horse Race Course is a must-visit for horse racing enthusiasts.
It’s one of the few places in Southeast Asia where visitors can come to witness horse racing, and each time there is an event, it’s always a well-attended occasion to look forward to.
Chiang Mai Horse Race Course Address & Major Events, Thailand
Race days always fall on a Saturday, with the first race held around 1:30pm. Visitors can choose from the air-conditioned VIP area or the public grandstand. Even if you book VIP tickets, the seats here are significantly cheaper than what you would normally pay elsewhere. Regardless of which seat you book, both are already equipped with facilities for betting on horses. The standard bets are win and place, and it’s good to know that the bookies can speak enough English to help foreigners with their bets.
Wins are those bets that are exclusively for first place, while a place can apply to 1st, 2nd, or 3rd places. The admission fees are low, but it’s up to you to spend as much or as little as you’d like with betting. Binoculars are also rented out near the VIP area. Several stalls throughout the racecourse sell beer, inexpensive Thai snacks, and refreshments for your enjoyment throughout the event.
While gambling is generally illegal in Thailand, this one is a military-operated event and the government benefits from taxes. So there’s no reason to worry about breaking the law when coming here.
The Chiang Mai Horse Race Course is located at Chang Phuak, north of the Old City. You can take a tuk tuk, songthaew, or taxi to get here.
