Chiang Mai Moat

The Chiang Mai moat is a small body of water that surrounds the old city; popular among locals, residents, and expats – especially those who enjoy going for a morning stroll.

After all, this city is one of the most picturesque places to explore on foot, with many beautiful locations.

On each side of the moat there is a major road which travels clockwise on one and counter-clockwise on the other. If you are visiting this area, it’s recommended to make the short but relaxing trek to this part of the city. Not many tourists outside of the city know about this little gem, plus it’s a great place to get a few photos in.

The streets are dotted with several fantastic small cafes as well as restaurants; excellent places for you to enjoy a meal or drink. As a bonus, the moat is near one of the best places to get some khao soi, a delicious, rich curry noodle dish that placed Lanna cuisine on the map.

Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to visit the Chiang Mai moat. This is when the light tends to be more golden, with amazing rays cast down to the city and the nearby surrounds.

The moat is also close to one of the main gates of the city. If you haven’t explored this area yet, check out the Tha Phae Gate which is the eastern wall. As you head north, this is when you will start to observe more tourist activity and lots of great attractions.

So when you want to get away from the hectic pace of the rest of the city, why not check out this moat for a change? Just make sure to wear good rubber or walking shoes so that you can comfortably walk to the nearby attractions.
