For many centuries, the city served as the headquarters of the Mon Dvaravati kingdom. It is also where the remains of the Mon Queen Chama Thewi is found; the Queen ruled over this part of the country for a significant period in history.

However, today it’s well known among travellers who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai for a day. Lamphun is surrounded by picturesque rural countryside with sprawling rice fields and beautiful orchards of longan trees.

Speaking of longan, don’t miss out on the Lamphun Longan Festival which takes place every August. Longans are an important crop here, and the festival is a great time to experience a fun parade, fireworks, live music, and many other forms of entertainment.

Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is an iconic temple in Lamphun. According to legends, no other than Buddha actually visited the temple and left his footprints cast in a corner of the temple. Construction of the temple started in 897, though the compound was established in 1044. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai features numerous notable architectural features and has served as a major place of worship in the area.

Drop by the Hariphunchai National Museum to learn more about the ancient history of this mystical place. You’ll discover interesting artefacts and displays that tell you all about the archaeological significance of this city. From prehistoric skeletons to centuries-old artefacts, the Hariphunchai National Museum is definitely worth a visit.

When all that sightseeing works up an appetite, head over to the main street of Lamphun where you’ll find several delicious eateries serving up authentic Thai noodle and rice dishes.
