Chiang Mai Area – Mae Rim
Mae Rim is a district located just north of Chiang Mai city in northern Thailand. It’s become increasingly popular especially in the recent years, particularly among travellers looking for a short trip away from Chiang Mai that brings them close to nature and culture.
One of the many things that makes Mae Rim truly special is its serenity. Certainly, it’s much more tranquil here than in Chiang Mai.
Mae Rim Tourist Attractions, Things To Do & Activities, Chiang Mai Thailand
If you’re looking for an extraordinary experience during your trip, don’t miss out on the Mae Rim Elephant Sanctuary, where elephants can roam freely in a safe environment. Visitors are invited to get close to these animals – even feed and walk them!
The Mae Sa Waterfalls is a majestic sight, but also a really awesome place to cool down. Featuring a total of 10 cascades, each of them with their own viewing deck, Mae Sa Waterfalls are the perfect way to chill out especially after a day outdoors. There are some food stalls in and around the falls, but you are welcome to bring your own food for a picnic too.
Head over to the Dara Pirom Palace Museum to immerse in Mae Rim’s culture and history. The museum is housed in a stunning 19th-century palace; once the home of the Lanna Kingdom’s last princess, Dara Rasmee. The museum is recognised as an important architectural landmark, as it’s a terrific way to learn about how the royal Thai family once lived. It’s also a means of honouring Dara Rasmee, known for her advocacies on education, public health, and agriculture – truly a hero in the locals’ eyes.
Within the main town of Mae Rim itself, highway 1096 is perhaps the busiest area. This is where you’ll find a variety of restaurants and food stalls worth discovering. Highway 1096 also happens to be the starting point of the famous Samoeng Loop; a popular motorcycle route that has drawn adventure lovers from all over the globe.
Mae Rim may be a sleepy town, but it’s filled with lots of gems to explore. We recommend staying a few days to get the most out of this charming area!
