Ran-Tong Save & Rescue Elephant Centre

The Ran-Tong Save & Rescue Elephant Centre is an elephant sanctuary which is dedicated to the conservation and protection of the endangered Asian elephants.

Located just north of Chiang Mai, the elephants you meet here have all been rescued from lives of abuse in the tourism industry.

The sanctuary was founded in 2009, and since then, they have successfully rescued more than 40 elephants – thanks to the help and generosity of donors, as well as the visitors who come to spend time with these majestic animals. Because of the superior quality of the sanctuary (as well as the satisfaction from the customer’s side), the centre has received numerous awards as a testament to their ethics and commitment.

They currently offer several programs that visitors can choose from. There are half-day and full-day learning programs, as well as programs that include exciting white-water or ATV activities after interaction with the elephants. Visitors can learn the proper way of riding and mounting elephants safely while trekking to the lush forests with them. Afterwards, you get to bathe and cleanse them for a fun and rewarding time. If you have more time, you might want to check out the more immersive two or three-day programs.

Because Ran-Tong Save & Rescue Elephant Centre relies heavily on visitors, tourism, and donations, there is also the option of adopting an elephant for 5,000 baht. Each adoption includes a certificate, a free visit to the sanctuary each time you come to Chiang Mai, a photo album, as well as weekly and monthly updates of your elephant, which is sent to you even once you’ve arrived home.

Additionally, they also offer extremely rewarding volunteer programs. There are positions for one up to four weeks for the volunteer program. No matter which package you choose, this is one of the best experiences you’ll have during your travels.

All programs are open to anyone who loves animals, no experience is needed, but you’ll have to be at least 18 years of age.
