Wat Huay Pla Kang

Wat Huay Pla Kang is a famous temple just outside the city centre of Chiang Rai; one of the most popular, and frequently visited temples by both tourists and locals.

It gets its name from the 9-storied pagoda which visitors can climb for breathtaking panoramic views.

Wat Huay Pla Kang 9 Tier Temple, Opening Hours & History, Chiang Rai

The temple’s most distinct feature is the massive white Buddha that glistens under the hot sun. However, the image of the Buddha is particularly impressive at night. Visitors are encouraged to take their time exploring each floor of the temple, where you will find numerous Buddha relics and images, which is what sets it apart from other temples in Thailand.

As soon as you enter, it has a calm and serene feeling throughout all of the floors; including the very last tier, which is tiny but also worth checking out. Each tier also has its own balcony from where visitors can look out to the temple’s surroundings. Additionally, every single one of the 9 tiers features an incredible wooden Buddha statue.

The ground floor of the temple is the most spacious, with enough room to sit and relax. You’ll likely see a lot of monks around the temple, so make sure to be respectful and quiet at all times during your visit.

One of the most astonishing aspects of this temple is how perfectly symmetrical it is, which you can observe from both inside and out. It’s also one of the newer temples in Chiang Rai, and it’s very well-maintained, so it’s sparkling clean wherever you go.

For many, the best sight of all is the Buddha statue which is perched on a hill right beside the temple. Pictures are allowed at the Wat Huay Pla Kang temple, but visitors are encouraged to read up on temple etiquette and attire before going.
