Chiang Mai Provinces

Thailand is broken down into 77 provinces, with Chiang Mai being the second largest. Within Chiang Mai Province are 25 districts (amphoe), each with their own sub-districts (tambon) and smaller villages.

Chiang Mai is bordered by the following provinces in northern-Thailand: Mae Hong Song to the west, Chiang Rai to the north, Lampang and Lamphun to the east and Tak to the South.

Other provinces in northern-Thailand include Phrae, Sukothai and Nan (which borders Laos to the east). The northern-Thailand region in general is mountainous and forested, however there are a number of large cities located here including the cities of Chiang Mai, Pai, Chiang Rai and Lampang.
