On arrival, travellers will notice the lack of motorbikes and tuk tuks around the township as much of Mae Hong Son has preserved its remote setting and simple way of life. Visitors can get around the small towns by walking or by bicycle, otherwise the best way to get between towns is to hire a car or take a tour bus.

Whilst in Mae Hong Son, visitors should make sure to go on a jungle trek and visit some of the hilltribes that live here. Tham Pla-Namtok Pha Suea National Park has some amazing features for adventure-seekers to enjoy including Pha Sua Waterfall and the Tham Pla Fish Cave. The Fish Cave only costs 100 THB to enter and houses an underwater cavern with thousands of fish. A beautiful and relatively secluded spot that isn’t yet visited by hoards of tourists.

The popular Su Tong Pae Bamboo Bridge is also a popular attraction which is located just 15 minutes north of the city. Joining two towns together, the Bamboo Bridge spans 900 metres over a rice paddy field and is a picturesque location popular with photographers. Those wanting to take it easy should check out Phu Klon Mud Spa, where you can get a mud mask for 80 THB or a full spa packages for 1200 THB. Other attractions also include the Queens residence (Pang Tong Palace) which has beautiful gardens.

The best times to visit this Mae Hong Son is between November and February when the weather is cool and dry. The wet season that lasts between June and October is not ideal because the roads become very difficult to navigate. The hot season can get unbearably hot and uncomfortable, thanks to the smoke that originates from the slash and burn agricultural technique.

You can get to Mae Hong Son from Chiang Mai by taking a mini-bus from the Arcade Bus Terminal. The trip will take around 6 hours and will cost around 250 THB.

Accommodation is widely available in the form of guest houses and is very cheap. If you have your own transport, there are also many retreats located just a short distance out of town. Click the link below to browse through the range of accommodation options available.
